One-night stays and the rules that bite

For a single night, every house rule lands within hours of booking — the cancellation cutoff, the arrival window, the hold and the departure time all apply at once.

The cancellation clock starts first. Rates sort into three shapes — fully refundable, refundable until 24 hours before arrival, and non-refundable — and the deadline is usually 18:00 local time on the day before arrival. 'Local' means the property's clock, which matters when booking from another time zone the night before a drive.

The channel decides how strict that clock is. Direct booking often includes a free-cancellation window and sometimes a small credit; some third-party rates are prepaid and non-refundable, which is precisely why they top the price-sorted results. For a one-night stay booked days ahead with uncertain plans, the flexible rate is usually the cheaper outcome even at a few dollars more.

Arrival has its own window. Standard check-in is 15:00, and early check-in is often available on request — often at a charge, because the rate bought the room from mid-afternoon, not from morning. A 10:00 arrival plan is therefore a conversation to have with the property before the trip, not at the desk.

At the desk, expect the incidentals pre-authorisation: a hold of roughly USD 50-200 on the card against possible charges. Nothing is spent unless something is charged, but the hold reduces available credit until the property releases it after check-out — and on a debit card that is real money temporarily out of reach. A card with comfortable headroom avoids the awkward version of this conversation.

Departure is the last rule. Check-out is 11:00, so the standard night is a 20-hour window, 15:00 to 11:00. Early departure changes nothing about the price — the night was the unit sold — so the last money tasks are checking that no incidental charge appeared and that the hold drops. The full price breakdown is in What a nightly rate really costs, and the property-selection checklist is in Choosing a budget property.

  • Cancellation cutoff: commonly 18:00 local the day before arrival
  • Check-in: 15:00 standard; earlier on request, often at a charge
  • Incidentals hold: USD 50-200 pre-authorisation at the desk
  • Check-out: 11:00 standard — a 20-hour window for the night paid
  • Prepaid third-party rates: the strictest terms in the listing
